A

Affinity
Affinity is when planets and other factors are similar or mutual attraction or compatibility.

Affliction
A traditional astrology term, describes adverse aspects especially formed by malefics.

Accidental Dignity
A planet that lives in its house of natural ruler ship or falls within 5° of an angle is said to be accidentally dignified. It is also applied to planets that live in angular houses and to the most elevated planets in a horoscope.

Air Signs
Aquarius (fixed), Libra (cardinal) and Gemini (mutable). These are traditionally linked with the air element and members of the air triplicity, so it indicates free flowing expression in the areas of communication and intellect.

Akashic records
"Memories" or "Book of Life" or "Memory of nature", a Sanskrit term refers to memories of all experiences from the beginning of life, stored permanently in a spiritual substance (Akasha).

Anareta
Means "Destroyer" in Greek. Applied to a malefic that resides in an anaretic place and afflicts the Hyleg; believed by ancients to be life-destructive. Known as the "killing planet", it is believed to indicate the cause of death.

Angles
The Angles are the most important houses. Planets lies angles are the strongest and most important. In order of power: First House (Ascendant - East Angle), Tenth House (M.C. - South Angle), Seventh House (Descendant - West Angle) , Fourth House (I.C. - North Angle)

Angular
A fundamental point in the horoscope.

Arc
In astrology, the curved path of an astral body and the angular measurement of this path. Also referred to as an orb.

Astrologer
A person who practices astrology.

Astrologian
A person who teaches astrology.

Astrologist
A non-professional who believes in or studies but does not necessarily practice astrology.

Astrologist
Who believe in, or follow, astrology, but not necessarily an actual astrologer.

Astrology
Astrology is the science of the stars; it is the application of planets, stars and other celestial phenomena in our lives. A very ancient practice, yet still vital discipline.

Astrometeorology
"Meteorological Astrology" includes prediction of storms, weather, floods etc. using ancient astrological methods.

Aquarius
In Zodiac it is eleventh sign. Aquarius, the Water-bearer is a fixed air sign.

Aries
In Zodiac it is first sign. Aries, the Ram, is a cardinal fire sign, beginning in the Tropical system at the vernal equinox.

B

Balsamic Moon
The final stage of the Moon, between the last quarter and the darkness of the New Moon.

Birth Chart or Natal Chart
Birth Chart or horoscope is a map of the planetary positions along the belt of the Zodiac when a person (the native) was born. The natal chart presents an astrological blueprint for a person's life.

Birth data
The data needed for calculating a birth chart: Example: date of birth, time of birth, and location (latitude and longitude) of birth.

Bi-quintile
An aspect created between two planets or consequence points that has an arc of 144°

C

Cadent Houses
"Falling away" (from the angles), Houses third, sixth, ninth and twelfth. Planets in these houses are generally weaker, being less stable and more changeable in their effects, if not they are the natural rulers of the houses, as with Mercury in the third or sixth, Jupiter in the ninth or twelfth, Neptune in the twelfth. According to traditional astrology, planets in these houses only function at 25% of their power.

Cancer
In zodiac it is fourth sign. Cancer, the crab, is a cardinal water sign. Ruled by the Moon, it is the adulation of Jupiter.

Capricorn
In zodiac Capricorn is the tenth sign. Capricorn, the sea-goat, is a cardinal earth sign. Ruled by Saturn, it is the adulation of Mars.

Cardinal Signs
Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn are the cardinal signs. These are movable Signs; they stand for the seasonal changes, marking the four quarters of the year. The quality of these signs is associated with action and the ability and desire to initiate action.  

Celestial
A heavenly body in space, such as a planet, moon, sun, asteroid or comet. Celestials are often considered to be life form rather than objects.

Cosmecology (cosmic ecology)
Science of considering Earth in its relationship to celestial phenomena.

Cosmic cross
An old term represents a T-square, Grand Square (grand cross).

D

Decanate
Partition of each Sign into three equal parts of 10 degrees each. Each part of this is called as a decanate; every sign is composed of 30 degrees; therefore Those who born between the 1st and the 10th day of any sign is said to be born in the First (1st) Decanate. Those born between the 11th and the 20th, the Second Decanate, and those born between the 21st and the last day of any sign is said to be born in Third (3rd) Decanate.

Decile (semi-quintile)
An aspect created between two planets or consequent points that have an arc of 36°00'.

Dragon’s head
An ancient phrase for the Moon's North Node.

Dragon’s tail
An ancient phrase for the Moon's South Node.

Double signs, double-bodied signs
Gemini, Sagittarius, and Pisces are double-bodied signs (dual signs). Gemini has two "bodies" in its symbol, the symbol of the Twins and Sagittarius’s symbol is part man, part beast and Pisces’s symbol is two fishes.

Dignity
The sign of dignity is the sign that the planet rules naturally. It is in domal dignity when it is in its own sign.

Earth Signs
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn are the signs that belong to the Earth and its resources, symbolizes "earth" qualities such as stability, solidarity and practicality.

East Point (equatorial Ascendant)
East Point is the point at which the sign and degree rises over the eastern horizon at Earth's equator at any given time; the point where Earth's equator intersects the ecliptic.

Earth Element
There are four earth elements. The elements are feminine element, Fire, Air and Water.

Electional Astrology
A system of astrology in which a cast is used to determine the most advantageous time to carry out a significant action, such as marriage, travel, business, buying car, buying house etc.

Ephemeris (plural: ephemerides)
An almanac, which lists the positions (signs) of the planets at exact points each day and other astronomical data. It is used to create birth charts.

F

Feminine Signs
The Earth and Water Signs (Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces) are feminine signs. It does not refer to sex or gender; they are associated with receptiveness.

Fertile signs
Fertile signs are Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces; they are said to be more fruitful and good for planting when occupied by the Moon, and are indicators of offspring when occupying the cusps of the fifth or eleventh houses.
Semi-fertile or moderate fruitful signs are Taurus, Libra, and Capricorn.
Barren or sterile signs are Aries, Gemini, Leo, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Aquarius. The barren signs are good for cultivation when occupied by the Moon.

Fire signs
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are the signs associated to fire element. It symbolizes characters, such as ardor, spirit, spontaneity.

Fixed signs
Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are the fixed or stable mode of expression signs.

Geniture
From the Latin, birth or origin. In astrology refers to a birth Chart or a natal horoscope.

Gemini
It is the third zodiac sign;  Mutable and airy.

Genethliacal astrology
An old term used for natal astrology.

Hellenistic Astrology
Ancient Western Astrology that was practiced during the Hellenistic Period.
 
Horoscope
A horoscope is a chart calculated (cast) for a precise time (hour and minute of a specific day, month and year) plus precise location (longitude of birth).
 
House
One of the twelve derived sections (houses) of a horoscope, each of which symbolizes a particular area of life. The zodiacal degree and the size of a house that appears on its cusp are based on the house system used.

I

Ingress
Planet entry into a sign. Usually the Sun's ingress will be in any of the four cardinal signs.

Intercepted sign
A sign that entirely contained within a house but does not appear on a house cusp.

J

Jupiter
The fifth planet from the Sun and considered as king of the gods. It represents benevolence, abundance, success, joy, happiness, and good fortune and so on.

K

Karma
The end result of actions from this or previous lives, either positive or negative and it is viewed as a preparatory phase for the next state.

Leo
Leo is the fifth sign of zodiac and is the fire sun that is ruled by sun. The symbol of Leo is LION and the major features are speculative, honorable, proud, ostentatious, dramatic and self-assured.

M

Mars
From the sun, Mars is the fourth planet; it is also called as red planet. The features of mars in astrology are force, action, annoyance, violence, sexual desire, and war.

Mercury
Mercury is a planet that is close to the sun. Mercury characteristics are mind, speed, the hands and arms, intelligence, communication, and thoughts and ideas of all kinds. Gemini and Virgo are ruled by this planet.

Mutable signs
Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are mutable signs. These expresses adaptability, ingenuity, and changeability to some degree and they can be easily influenced by others.

Natal Chart
Also called as Birth chart. A chart of the planetary positions drawn for the nativity on a specific date, at a specific time and place.

Ninth House
The ninth part of the Natal Chart. Features are philosophy, religion, law, intelligence, intuition, vision.

Numerology
The study of the meaning of numbers and their relation to one's fate. Astrology is the basis for numerology. The numbers used to calculate one’s destiny may be their birth date and full given birth name.

P

Pisces
It is a Mutable water sign which is ruled by Jupiter. The symbol of Pisces is a brace of fishes.

Progression
Movement of planet or important point in horoscope at a particular time after birth. There are two levels of progression: primary progression (one degree of motion denotes a year in the life of the native); secondary progression (each day after the birth date denotes a year in the life of the native).

Psychic
A person who has the ability to forecast the future or telepathic talents.

Q

Quadrant
One of the four quarters of a horoscope, each surrounded by two angles not opposite each other.

Qualities
Also called as Quadruplicities. Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable are the classifications of zodiac signs. Here Cardinal represents beginning signs; Fixed denotes completion signs and Mutable signs can be beginning or completion.

R

Rising Sign
Rising sign is also known as Ascendant. The sign that is rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of one’s birth.

Ruler
Planet that is assigned to a sign depending on its similarity with the sign’s character is the ruler or Lord of the sign. Example:  Mercury is the ruler of Gemini.

Ruling Planet
The ruling planet is the planet that is highly noble by elevation, sign and feature in the birth chart. The planetary ruler of the signs are: Aries, Mars; Taurus and Libra, Venus; Gemini and Virgo, Mercury; Cancer, the Moon; Leo, the Sun; Scorpio, Pluto; Sagittarius, Jupiter; Capricorn, Saturn; Aquarius, Uranus; Pisces, Neptune.

S

Sesquiquadrate
A characteristic created between two planets, or cusps with the separating distance of 135° 00'.

Sixth House
Sixth of the 12 astrological houses. The features are associated with work, health, employees, nutrition, pets and the sign ruler is Virgo.  

Sun Signs
The twelve traditional astrology signs of the zodiac. The sun passes through the Sun Sign at a moment of one’s birth.

Taurus
Taurus is an earth sign with bull symbol that is ruled by Venus and it is the second sign of the Zodiac. The features are methodical, cautious, down-to-earth, reliable, practical, stubborn, and persistent.  

Tenth House
The tenth segment of 12 astrological houses, the key features are career, reputation, public image, and the ruler sign is Capricorn.

Tarot
A set of symbols used in a pack of 78 cards; tarot reading is done for personal development or for insight.

Telepathy
Paranormal consciousness of a person's experience, thought, feeling, etc.

Third House
Third house of the 12 astrological houses; its main feature is communication, Intellect. Therefore it is also known as the House of Communication. Planetary ruler is Mercury and the sign is Gemini.

Transit
The movement between the heavenly bodies or planets over a specific point, sign, planet or house cusp in a horoscope. This transmission of planets refers to the creation of a certain zodiacal influence.

Triplicity
Characteristics of the natural elements like fire, earth, water, and air. The basic features of these sign are fire: energy; earth: practical; water: emotion; air: intellect;

U

Uranian Planets
Planets assumed to lie beyond the orbit of Neptune, Uranian Planets; it is also called as trans-neptunian planets. These were discovered in 1914 by Alfred Witte, founder of the Hamburg School.

V

Virgo
An earth sign which is ruled by mercury and it is the sixth sign of the zodiac. Logical, practical, flexible, realistic, balanced, and health-oriented are the associated features.

Void of Course
A word describing a planet that does not form a main aspect further of its time in a sign in which it is sited. It is generally confined to the Moon in Horary Astrology.

Vedic Astrology
A system of astrology preferred in India, which is derived by the Vedas. The prime differences between Vedic and modern Western Astrology is the Zodiac, planetary periods and sub-periods, the idea of planetary "friends" and "enemies" and the use of the nakshatras, or Lunar Mansions.

Vulcan
A hypothetical planet with its orbit between Mercury and the Sun; it is about twelve million miles from the Sun.

Water Signs
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces are the water signs; feeling, emotion, receptivity, sensitivity, and imagination are its related characters.

X

Xenoglossy
The power of speaking or writing in a language that has not been learned.

Y

Yoga
Spiritual philosophy originates in India that tells the use of physical and psycho-spiritual methods to lead the person to greater realization.

Z

Zodiac
In western astrology, there are 12 zodiac signs of 30 longitudinal degrees and each sign is represents unique characteristics that are considered to be significant as the planets moves across each sign.

Zenith
The point straightly overhead or the maximum point; it is converse to the nadir.
